Schneider Electric’s Planet & Society Barometer: Exceeding Goals & Setting New Commitments


Launched in 2005, Schneider Electric’s Planet & Society Barometer is a sustainability scorecard the compSchneider Planet & Society Barometerany uses to measure its commitment to sustainable development on a quarterly basis and contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a group of 17 goals addressing the need to limit the rise of global temperatures. The barometer is aligned along the three pillars of planet, profit, and people, using several indicators in each to quantify progress. Schneider participates in this sustainability benchmarking, measurement and improvement because it ensures that sustainability remains a crucial part of the company’s long-term strategy.

Barometer indices are set based on 3-year increments and a combined score which is measured out of 10. On February 15, 2018, the results of the program for the past 3 years (2015-2017) were announced, demonstrating progress that is above and beyond what the company set out to achieve.

Highlights of Schneider Electric’s 2015-2017 Planet & Society Barometer accomplishments include:

  • Exceeded target for reducing CO2 emissions from transportation, reaching 10.3% savings from transportation.
  • Avoided 120,000 tons of CO2 emissions through maintenance, retrofit and end-of-life services.
  • Achieved target for quantifying impact of 100% of new large customer projects. In 2017, all major customer projects benefited from a complete evaluation of the CO2 emissions induced and avoided with a standardized methodology.
  • Exceeds target for 85% of employees to work in countries with Schneider gender pay equity plan by reaching 89%. This indicator measures the percentage of employees working in countries where there is a gender pay equity operational plan, namely a measure of pay equity and, if there are pay gaps, corrective actions put in place.

These results from 2015-2017 have served to further increase Schneider Electric’s ambition for the next round of commitments for the 2018-2020 scorecard.

Ongoing commitments for 2020 and beyond include:

  • Use 80% renewable electricity by 2020 and 100% by 2030, while doubling energy productivity compared to 2005 levels.
  • Through product and service offerings, avoid the emission of 100 million tons of CO2 on its customers’ end;
  • Reach 200 sites labeled zero-waste-to-landfill by 2020 and recover 100% of its industrial waste by 2030;
  • Through the Access to Energy Program, facilitate access to lighting and communication for 50 million disadvantaged people using low carbon solutions by 2025; train 350,000 disadvantaged people worldwide in energy management and 1 million by 2025;
  • Deploy the new Schneider Electric well-being program for at least 90% of employees, which includes comprehensive medical coverage and training;
  • Elevate commitments to achieve gender pay equality for at least 95% of employees – this is a major goal of our involvement in the HerForShe movement.

At Schneider, strategy and sustainability go hand in hand. This is just a snapshot of our barometer 2018-2020, which includes no less than 21 programs to be discovered through our quarterly communications during the 3-year program. Results for the program during Q1 will be presented on April 19, 2018.
